Playing fantasy baseball across four decades now, I’ve seen all sorts of problems arise ranging from the tedious to the illogical to the insane. I’ve seen drafts started earlier than agreed upon due to a mob mentality from rabid fantasy owners who couldn’t accept a few down days after the Superbowl. (And had Manny drafted for me in the 1st round: hogwash!) I’ve seen GMs ignore clear criteria for trades set forth in the constitution and complain endlessly about “keeper trades” that were in every way legal. (What? A-Rod for Strasburg doesn't seem fair? Tough noogies!)

Nothing beats the feeling of settling in for draft day. Regardless of the time spent on preparation, everyone feels like they have a chance as the season starts. Sure, sometimes those hopes are dashed when a person in your league drafts a closer who just retired (true story), but the potential for building a winner sits in any given web browser.

Since my e-mail went out to you guys many of you have been asking for an update on my niece Maria. This time instead of e-mail blast, I thought it'd be easier and less spammy to update here.
After a great week where we found out the doc surgerically removed 100% of the tumor, she got out of ICU, and things seemed to be going well, we got slammed last night.
The results of biopsy came back and we found out the Maria's cancer is advanced. We were told that she was probably born with it and at this point will have to undergo massive chemo/radiation as well as stem cell therapy. The worst part though is when they throw numbers at you. She was given a 33% chance of survival. As we know in the baseball word that's a great number, and that's how I'm approaching this thing.
So over the next couple of months I'll be flying back and forth to NY, Boston, and Vermont to be with family to help my niece, my sister and brother in-law beat this thing.
I'm in the process of setting up a non-profit organization and already have had several former and current baseball players say they will be donating items for auction in the near the future to help.
It really is amazing to me that we never think about these kinds of things until it happens to us. But as you all know here, even though we're a fantasy baseball site, one of our goals has always been to help those in need -- 24-hour Talk-A-Thon.
So thank you guys and gals that have been e-mailing me, I really appreciate it.

Well, its that time of year again, when fantasy “experts” have the audacity to make unsubstantiated predictions about the year in fantasy baseball to come. I would never reduce myself to such tomfoolery, of course, not without a suitably ironic introduction to ease y’all into it anyway.

On May 20 of last year Fangraphs announced that they could break down at-bats pitch by pitch and assign values based on the outcome of each one. While it is a tremendous undertaking in scope, fair questions can be asked as to how valuable the information is. After all, it was explicitly stated, "this is kind of a first stab at the data and weights we're using per an actual event." The raw numbers are quite isolated as well as being luck and defense neutral, putting a great deal of "noise" into the results. The hope could be that the sample size grows to even out everything. If that is the case, it will happen first with fastballs.

There will not be many occasions this year where you will find B.J. Upton on a fantasy team that is managed by this writer. Upton is a fine player for what he provides, but it still seems that many owners are expecting the great things he did in 2007 and not necessarily looking at the last two seasons as closely as they should. Perhaps 2009 was the worst of the worst, but what should the expectations be for this young player?

The key to looking for value in a Fantasy Baseball draft is to find players that have a low ADP but have peripheral statistics that would suggest the player will outperform his draft position and therefore bring value.
